The earth holds the promise of verdant fields and lush gardens. It offers glimpses of the paradise that might be attained, a beauty unsurpassed. These wonders it can sustain, the sweetest fruit it can bear, but not as it is now. The seed cannot take hold on the rock, for the winds will scatter it. Neither can it blossom among the thorns, for they will choke it. If the seed is to take root, it must burrow deep in the earth. So first, the earth must be broken; first, man must toil. When at last the sweat is on his brow and the soil has been made ready, when his labor has been sufficient to please the fickle seed, then, and only then, will it perform its transformative miracle.

Just as the man and his pick can till the soil, so can music till the soul. When preconceptions and pride have been broken and the hardest heart has been softened, then, and only then, can the Holy Spirit work its miracle.

Let the earth be broken. Let the redemption begin.
